Close the Blinds During Sleep to Protect Your Health
The researchers of a recent study uncovered that sleeping in a room with ambient lighting can negatively impact humans’ cardiovascular function while they are sleeping. By contrast, sleeping in a room with dim lights will not have that same negative impact. Moreover, sleeping in a room with moderate lights for only one night could worsen the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
When a person sleeps in a light room, their body can’t rest well since the heart rate increases during sleeping in a room with such lighting. The nervous system, either the sympathetic or parasympathetic one, is active even during sleeping. The first one is responsible during the day, while the second one at night when the body rests.
Researchers discovered insulin resistance in people who have slept in a moderate-lit room, which means they can not use glucose from their bodies as an energy source. When that happens, the pancreas produces more insulin, and the blood sugar levels increase. Moreover, as per previous research, people exposed to light when they are sleeping tend to be more overweight and obese.
Many people are exposed to artificial lighting when sleeping, especially those who live in large cities. Almost half of the people sleep with a bedside lamp or a bedroom light turned on. Although exposure to light is recommended during daylight hours, exposure to any light at night can harm cardiovascular and endocrine health.
It is recommended not to turn any lights on while sleeping. In addition, the bedroom color is also essential, and it should not be very light. Furthermore, if there are outdoor lights, it is recommended to wear an eye mask if the bedroom does not have window darkening shades.
