How Effective Is Resveratrol in Treating Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a health condition in which tissue that is identical to the womb lining develops in other areas — the fallopian tubes and the ovaries. Women of all ages can be affected by this condition that brings about irregular bleeding, infertility, and chronic pain.
As of now, a cure for endometriosis does not exist. However, many patients are successfully treated with anti-inflammatory drugs.
As for the prevalence of the disorder, endometriosis is believed to affect one out of every ten women. Astoundingly, it takes about seven and a half years from the onset of symptoms for a woman to be diagnosed.
Recent studies on the treatment of the condition give hope to those affected by it. Experts at the University of Medical Sciences in Iran discovered that compounds found in red wine could aid in the treatment of endometriosis symptoms. Namely, resveratrol is found to be quite effective.
The research, issued in the Nature Journal, looked at the antioxidant-abundant resveratrol and its effects on women living with the disease. Researchers examined the endometriosis cells of 40 patients dealing with stage 3 and stage 4 of the condition. Additionally, the experts tested resveratrol on 15 people who did not have endometriosis.
The findings revealed that resveratrol is potentially effective in suppressing the symptoms of endometriosis, managing inflammation. According to the researchers, the compound inhibited proteins and three genes that made cells grow outside of the uterus. In other words, resveratrol may help mitigate the progression of endometriosis by reducing the expression of the genes involved in affected cells.
Finally, if you are not a fan of wine, you can also obtain resveratrol from other sources, including grapes, blueberries, dark chocolate, peanuts, and top-quality resveratrol supplements.
